Yes, several people. The first time was difficult for me because he wa really a nice guy. I just told him the truth - that his performance didn't match his resume'. He knew he had over-sold himself. Each situation is different but it was never easy to tell someone they're not good enough.

Not so much fire someone as be responsible for someone not being accepted to a position. It was very difficult because the decision affected this person's future in the work force and the subsequent finances of the family. All the pros and cons had to be weighed very carefully AND objectively. In the end, the decision had to be made, regrettable though it was.
This was a part of my job I really didn't enjoy doing and yet had to do on several occasions.

Yes. It depended on the reason for firing them. Usually we enjoyed working with them blah blah blah but at this point their work isn't up to par or we had to downsize or something of that nature. At this end I wished them luck. In my opinion there's no easy way to do it.

I didn't have to do it personally but I did have to recommend more than once that it be done (I was in a union and only certain managers had the ability to do so, or I would have)

many, many times...
you need to say something like sorry we need to part company
this is not working out or give the actual reason for termination
be sure not to say anything that may come back to bite you in the ***
keep it short and sweet
