More than likely he will. There are a couple of factors that point to him being a Maverick for life.

1) His age - He's now 28,29 I think. He doesn't have that many years left as a player. Most NBA careers are 5-7 years. Stars and Superstars often play 10-12 years, after which they rapidly decline in athleticism... their bodies simply cannot sustain the abuse, otherwise we'd still be watching Jordan dunk. Dirk probably has another 3-4 years at the most of playing at the elite/superstar level. After that he'll still be good, but he won't be great.

2) His contract - He currently is under a max out deal. And as its been shown this summer it is near impossible to trade any player on a max out contract. The money almost never matches up, and the way the NBA trading system works, if the money doesn't equal out between teams, then the trade will not be allowed. Dirk has a max contract, so money and years have to be equal in the players Dallas would receive in a trade.

3) Value in trade - Its not like a used car lot, NBA trades are always hard to pull off, even with average players. Both teams have to thnik they are getting a good deal. Now try dealing a superstar player, and one team always thinks they are getting screwed. So for that reason, the Mavs probably won't trade him. They won't think what they get in return is good enough.

Look at KG and Kobe. Earlier every team in the NBA wanted their shot at landing them, but as everyone found out, Minnesota was asking too much, and always thought they were not getting market value for him. Same with Kobe. The Lakers clearly believe that no amount of players are equal to Kobe's value, unless you do something stupid like Amare Stoudamire and Steve Nash for Kobe. And the Lakers still would think they would need more players or draft picks.

Now shift that view to the Mavericks. Who would Cuban take in return for Dirk? It would be alot. Kobe for Dirk he would do, but clearly the Lakers won't. In dealing with superstar players, you will almost never get equal or market value for what you are trading away.

Now after Dirk's current contract expires, that is when it becomes different. He will be an unrestricted free agent, but how good will he be in 2011? If he is a shadow of what he used to be, then he may end up like Hakeen Olajuwon or Patrick Ewing. They clearly were past their primes and could hardly move, yet still wanted to play in the NBA. Hakeem played in Toronto and Patrick played with Seattle. Houston and NY didn't want or need them because they could no longer help the club.

So if Dirk wants to play when he's in his late 30's when his body is broken down and he can't run as fast or shoot as well... that is when he might bounce from team to team for a couple of years. But if he is smart and chooses to retire before he becomes a has-been, then he stands a good chance at staying with the team his entier career.

As ong as they 1 day win an NBA championship....but if Dirk has 2 continue 2 shoulder the load that is the Dallas Mavericks under as much pressure in the playoffs as he's had these past 2 years, and not step up like he hasn't the past 2 years when the team needed him most....he might just wait till his contracts over 2 sign with another team....he's just a little 2 loyal 2 juss ASK 4 a trade...but it could happen...improbable....maybe....but possible no doubt

There are always those people that say that they want to retire in the current team they play in, but you usually should not believe of a word of that, because they either end up being traded or signing to another team that offers them more money.
As for Dirk, if he stays with Dallas contract until it expires, he'll be in Dallas, unless the team trades him.

Lord I hope so and I'm sure that he will carry the larry o brien trophy to the AAC. I have faith in Dirk. I've been a fan for a long time since the Blackman and Mashburn days. I've gone thorugh too much crap to not enjoy this. We will win the rings, just a matter of time. Dirk rules.

in sports these day with ridiculous contracts and billions of dollars being spent, a player rarely spends his entire career with one team. ill tell you this, if the mavs dont win a ring in the next 3-4 years, expect dirk to ask to be traded. hes made the money, hes won mvp, hes been to the finals, all thats left is to win the ring.

Yes, i mean if he didn't leave in the early years when they were loosing, what makes you think he would leave when they are actually winning, and year after year they are championship contenders, besides that he is already under contract until the year 2010-2011 Mark Cuban would ever let him go.
Mavs in 08 believe it!
