it goes in reverse for a few seconds then stops dead, what do i do to fix this

Have you checked the prop to see if it's fowled???

Hi ... it sounds like you have lost the reverse gear in the out drive..... If it stops dead ... do you mean the engine stops... or the boat stops.... if the engine stops then... the chances are you are going to loose all the gears in the out drive....
If the engine still runs but the boat stays still then it may be a loose linkage or a busted reverse gear....
If you are mechanically minded get the work shop manual for the out drive. strip it and rebuild it.... and say a few prayers to the big guy and hopefully it will work..
