NASA's budget got slashed after the Apollo missions. The money just wasn't there anymore. Plus, NASA has set its sights on Mars. We've done the moon, now its time to move out.
You also have to consider public interest. At the time of the first moon landing it was very big because everyone wanted to beat the Russians. Now, we're having real wars on real land and people don't have space travel at the forefront of their interests.
There is no *real* debate. The US sent several successful missions to the moon. Those who say otherwise are deluded and overly paranoid.

Travelling to the moon is very expensive, in order to justify another mission, there needs to be a new objective. If you study the Apollo missions they each had a specific objective, in fact one sent geologist to find rocks that would prove how old the earth is. So in order to recieve government funding, NASA has to have a good reason to go back to the moon. There is talk of a new moon mission by President Bush and NASA, possible objectives could be: a lunar telescope, search for lunar water, geology, or mining. The 1st time we went to the moon we were in a race agains the Soviet Union. Since we won the race there really hasn't been much motivation to return in the past 30 years until recently.

The moon is an episode that Nasa has conquered - it finds that the farthest reaches of space are more pressing than development of stations on the grey one. Priorities are far below par since the technology for rocket science has taken the lives of so many in so little time. So many accidents in so little time left the rocket launchers with an itchy head. The Russians, Indians, Chinese, Japanese and of course the Europeans are all looking forward to launches to the moon station. They just have a problem with the global warming its not cold enough.

well, landing on the moon was a race between the Soviets and Americans.. and there has been a few landings on the moon since the first..
I think they have achieved their goals and they probably know everything they wanted about the moon... since no one can live there, there is probably no reason to spend more money on going...
so they are probably trying to go to other plannets since everyone has this idea of starting life on another plannet like in the year 2100 or so.. :) maybe even in our life time :)

Because we have a war to pay for!!! ---- goddesshonibea

Please search : Vietnam War
1969 we were in the middle of it.
The main reason for going to the Moon was political. It was a battle in the Cold War. We now cooperate in space and going to the moon has lost it's priority over learning how to lve in space for extended periods... hence the space station.
Once the ISS is complete, the Orion program will take us back to the moon in preparation for a Mars mission.

We will not learn anything new by putting more people on the moon. We already brought back moon rocks and dust samples. What motivation do we have to spend millions of dollars on another manned moon mission? Especially considering an unmanned probe could do almost everything that a human could do...

What for? The missions to the moon were all pretty successful. There are no big questions that need anwering which we need to go there for. Mars is more interesting.

going to the moon costs billions of rands, the suite alone costs a mere $20 000 000. Planning takes years, so it will happen again..Just wait a few years...

I want to see the space shuttle land on the moon. Maybe we haven't gone back because we were never there to start with, or there is nothing of any value to go back for.
