Alhamdulillah, the author of the ‘People of the Cave’, did a wonderful job in presenting the story of the Ashab-e-Kahaf. However, there is one more angle to the story that was presented by Imam Alauddin Bakri at the annual commencement and graduation ceremony of the Institute of Islamic Education in Elgin near Chicago. Before the speech, the Imam came to the the institute and observed the students who were memorising the Holy Qur’an. He observed that the students , while memorising, were changing their position and were changing by shifting from one foot to the other. When he saw this, he said, he knew the reason for the Ashabe Kahaf changing their position while sleeping. The reason was the circulation of the blood.

In the middle of the 3rd century CE, some young men had remained faithful to the worship of One God when their people had fallen away into idolatry and were persecuting them for not following them. In order to escape further persecution, the young men took refuge in a cave, where they were miraculously put to sleep for 300 years. The story of ‘Ashabe Kahaf (sleepers of Ephesus)’ is narrated in Holy Qur’an. In addition to the Jewish scriptures, the Qur’ani narration told of how the sleepers slept in the cave for centuries and how their faithful dog lay with his front paws stretched over the threshold.
