isolated is worse, because that means there are less thunderstorms and thunderstorms are awesome so there should be lots and lots of thunderstorms all the time everywhere

The terms are spatial not temporal. There are more thunderstorms in an area when they are scattered than there are when they are isolated. Any place in that area is more likely to get a storm with scattered thunderstorms than they are with isolated storms. The terms say nothing about the size or strength of the thunderstorms or any phenomena associated with them. It is purely spatial distribution.

Isolated means that there will be a big thunderstorm for a short amount of time, scattered means a lot of little ones that last a long time.
