First, determine if it is the drain or the toilet. Pour a five gallon bucket of water into the bowl as fast as you can. If it starts going down and then backs up, it's a drainpipe problem. Since you can flush two or three times without backup, it's doubtful the drain is clogged. Remove the lid on the tank. The water level should be about 1/2 to 3/4" below the top of the overflow tube. Flush the toilet and watch the flapper that lifts up when you actuate the handle. It should stay up until almost all the water is gone out of the tank. If not, adjust the chain/strap that lifts it until it "just" seals. Last thing would be the holes under the bowl rim are filled with mineral deposits. You can check these with a mirror and open up any closed holes with a bent metal coat hanger. Good luck.

Toilet Flushing Slow

Pour a bucket of water into the bowl (use close to the same amount that it takes to flush the toilet). If this makes the toilet flush properly you most likely to not have a restriction in the drain. A worn flapper will shut too fast causing poor flushing condition. If you pass the bucket test try a new flapper specifically designed for the toilet you have.

I had a model toilet in a house that moved into that had jet hole in the bottom. A horizontal hole at the bottom about pinky size. It was cloggged but you could not see that.

So you would fush, but the flush was very weak since the jet barely worked. So you had to flush a lot.

The fix was to remove the toilet and put a garden hose on the jet hole to flush it reversely to loosen up and flush out the obstruction, which was a tooth paste cap that had made into the tank and to down to the jet, wedging itself on every flush.

The auger seemed to go up because toilets have an integral trap. You have to work a little to get the auger to go around the weir. If there are no obstructions in your sewer line it may be the water level in the tank. Adjust the water level as high as you can or remove water saving devices. If you don't have enough water entering the bowl from the tank, it will not flush properly.

I have the same problem with my toilets.. I started putting bleach down the drains to clear the pipes.. I do this about once a month... It also keeps the bowl nice and clean.. I put about 4C. bleach in the bowl and leave overnight.. Flush as usual in the AM before you use... Ammonia the main componet in urine will cause fumes.. If you have more than 1 bathroom try to let the bleach sit in the bowl a day or two... good luck
