Straight edge simply means that you don't drink, you don't do drugs, smoke cigarettes/cigars, or have sex without loving the person you have sex with. This is commonly forgotten in the definition, but it is part of it - as someone who's lived my life entirely straight edge.
Straight edge is a commitment - not just a lifestyle "for the time". It's not an in and out trend, and if you're seriously a straight edge, don't shame the rest of us.
Prescription drugs are acceptable, as long as you're taking them by the prescription and not to get high or just to help you fall asleep.
Vegetarian is also, not a requirement. Vegetarian/vegan and straight edge are two completely different lifestyles.

>Do you have to be a vegetarian and not take PRESCRIPTION drugs in order to be straight-edge?
I never heard of that back in my minor threat loving (early 80s) days. So unless the movement's picked up some excess baggage over the years, the answer is no.

I wouldn't even look at it as a lifestyle. How you are is a personal choice their doesn't have to be a lifestyle pinned to it. I smoke, drink, cus, take prescription drugs when I need to but none of that truly defines me, I am just as capable as anyone else when it comes to raising my kids and paying the bills, straight or bent, its good to be flexible. Just be who you are and live by the choices you make for yourself and don't worry about society and what they think about those choices.

I had to ask my teens what that referred too.
It means living in manner that will not harm your body, or mind.
No illegal drugs, no alcohol, or only in moderation when of legal age, no smoking, no unhealthy foods laden with chemicals, or artificial ingredients, no pre-marital relations, or other risky behaviors that adversely affect ones physically, or mental well being.
Well, I learned something new; the word "straight edge" that is, in my time we called it having plain old good sense.

Why don't you just live your life, instead of trying to put on a mask of a "lifestyle". Who gives a crap if some fad says you can't take prescription drugs or you have to be a vegetarian to be part of our particular sheep-pen. Can't you think for yourself? Just go be a human being for pete's sake.

you would still have to obstain from having sex in order to be considered straight edge- but you would willingly have to give up drinking, smoking, and any other ILLEGAL drug. your straight edge'nesss would not be tarnished if you were taking pills to save your life
