Heating pads work wonders. Either use a regular household heating pad, or pick up some therma-care pads from your local drug store. Either way, the heat will be a life saver. Hope this helps. :-)

Exercise is a great way. The reason why your cramp is your muscles are contracting (kinda like they would if you were going in to labor except a lot less painful) so if you do a few sit ups a day and strengthen those muscles it would lessen the pain. Also a hot water bottle and hot tea helps alot !The hot water bottle will help the muscles relax (just like when you muscles hurt and u use icy hot). Aside from all that, us women usually know we are getting our period some hours b4 we even start hurting. Personally, i take 600-800 mg of IBU right when the symptoms start, this also a sort of a muscle relaxer and lessens those cramps. Good luck!!

Talk to your doctor and see if s/he can change your prescription. Sometimes changing the formula will work. Or you may need to go off hormonal birth control and find an alternative.
