So I was driving to work when the engine started knocking white smoke started pouring out. I slowed down at a junction and it cut out.

Looks like I ran out of oil without any warning. I filled it with oil and managed to get it driving again but it only went about a mile before I stopped because the knocking started again. When I started it up again it got about half a mile before power cut out again.

The engine hasn't seized but seems some damage has been done. Is this as serious a job as I think it is? how much is it going to cost me ('96 Punto)?

this is a serious problem,if you ran it out of oil,it all depends on how good an oil you have had in it,to save the rod,and main brngs...and it's knocking, probably a rod brng..and the cost is gona be pretty bad... they usually charge by the hour, and is usually high....as old as this is,it's a good idea to not spend much money on it.it's about done it's time..

Here is a rule of thumb as a mechanic I tell people. Check your oil every other fuel fill up. Another one for ya...white smoke means that oil is getting into the cylinder and burning. Not good no matter how you look at it. Black smoke is typically a wrong mixture of gas etc and is easier to fix. Also, it depends if the damage has been in the bottom end (Cylinders, pistons and rings) which would be better off having a mechanic install a rebuilt motor. Make sure the motor you put into it has a warranty. Good luck.

Ran out of oil without warning? I like that. Do you ever get your oil changed or check the oil level? I have no clue what a '96 Punto is, but doesn't it have an oil pressure gauge or an idiot light? If you ran it without oil for any length of time, you have damaged the engine. Get it looked at.

Very serious you can get rid of that engine though and get a re-con engine put in for around £200/£300 total costs though!

loks like a scrapper to me mate as it is probably the big ends gone, age of the car seems to be not worth a rebuild or second hand engine.
Sorry to say this as well as the dipstick under the bonnet the thing that tells you the level of oil in your engine, there seems to be one asking a silly quetion here, lol

It sounds as though you have totalled the big ends and you really need to be looking at an engine transplant, but I would guess that it would be an uneconomical repair and you may well find that your best approach would be to look for another car.

Yep and bummer and cost, find a used engine. Oh and make sure you have a mechanical gauge or make sure your oil light is working
