The Firebird is the V6, the Trans Am the V8, most of the time. This applies to the 1980s and 90s, when Firebirds came with engines between 2.8 and 3.4 Litres of displacement, and Trans Ams mostly had the 5.7 V8, plus extra sporty things like ground effects, bucket seats, and wider wheels.
Both are based on the same chassis and body though, and yes, largely the same car otherwise.

The Firebird the car. The Trans Am is a version of the Firebird. In certain years (well, only 1969) the base Firebird could be an equal of the Trans Am depending on the equipment, like a RAIV. Starting in 1970, the only Firebird that could be the equal of the Trans Am was the Formula 400 (later, Formula 455).
In other worlds, every Trans Am is a Firebird, but not every Firebird is a Trans Am.
