The first recorded reference of the word "hi" came from a Kansas Native american as a way to call attention. Scholars believe it is a variant of Medieval English from the words "hy, hey." from the year 1475

When the Puritans would greet each other one would say, "Heaven is High". The other would respond, "Hell is low. This came to be shortened to just "Hi", (heaven is high) and "Hello", (Hell is low).
