I had a nickname all my life.
Everyone called me sis or sissy.
Didn't bother me until I was a teenager, I asked the family to call me by my real name.

My daughter, we called punkin` head. But not in public.
And my son we called Little Man, Because he was a little guy.
When he started sports (he was not little anymore) Our neighbor shouted out good job J-man and it stuck. We don't really call him that anymore. Every once in awhile I hear his dad call him that.

To answer your question, I believe people start calling their kids a nick-name for endearment reasons. Or the name just comes out and it is fitting for that person.

Maybe to give the child an option on what they would rather be called... I have the nickname Shorty (I've had it for almost 15 years), and there are some people that don't know my real name. : )
