http://www.cockatiels.org/ Hi. That is the website for the National Cockatiel Society. You can find a lot of whatever you wish to know from that site. Also, most pet stores sell cockatiels. If you do purchase one from a pet store, be sure that you check the store out to make sure that their environment is clean and pest free for the animal or bird you purchase and make sure you get a health certificate and guarantee from them for that pet. Most good pet stores will guarantee your pet for a week to 10 days. That gives you time to go have a vet check done on them. Keep that in mind also if you purchase one from a breeder. Ask for their credentials and contract and guarantee before you purchase one making sure they give you ample time to have it checked out. Also, if they are a good breeder, they will give you other clients who own pets they have bred so that you can call them and talk about their pets as well. You can type in just about any info into the search engine on the web and pull up what you need. Type in "Cockatiel Breeders for (what state you live in) and it will pull up any that are local in your area. In our city, they even have a bird group and everyone meets and chats and exchanges info on their type of pet. In the summertime, they all gather at the local ice cream place with birds in tow, most of them sitting on their shoulders. Hope that helps.

where do you live. pets stores and local breeders are your best bet. make sure they are hand raised not parent raised. hand raised means they were removed from the nest at about 2 weeks old and fed by a person. this ensures that they are more easily bonding to people and are pretty much hand trained. check the bird out before purchasing. hold him. some people don't believe in wing clipping, i am not one of them, these are usually the people who come in to the store to put a lost bird sign up at some time in their birds life. no matter how much control on your environment you have the kids a friend or neighbor can open the door unexpectedly, summer time and open window you name it. but when clipping keep in mind only enough so he cant fly up and away but can fly down. I start with 3 flight feathers from the tip and continue with one more until goal is reached but for a first time bird owner go to your vet or breeder or some pet stores will clip. check with other bird owners in your area to find the best place in your area

I'd like to add to Sunnyside Up's excellent information by recommending you check out http://www.petfinder.com for cockatiels for adoption in your area. Many rescue organizations post their available animals on petfinder, and also list their adoption guidelines. The nice thing about adopting a bird is that the rescue organization will often have already vet-tested the animals in their care and discuss the animals' temperaments and personalities.
Good luck with your search!

it really depends on where you live but there is a lady that I know that raises them and has a bunch of handfed babies right now, go to http://cable.gotfamiliesonline.com/ I have bought numerous birds from her and have never been disappointed, they are all really tame as well because she does the handfeeding.
