We haven't had an independent president since the formation of the modern Democratic and Republican parties
I would imagine socialists would vote with the democratic party, socialism is capitalism for the working class man. The Republican party's economic philosophy is trickle-down economics- which is short for give money to the rich people. The idea is they will spend it on goods and services and the money will make its way to the little guy.
Democrats prefer the opposite- to give tax breaks and such to the working class.
Neither of these economic theories can be proven because economics is not an exact science much like sociology. To the average voter however, the latter of the two choices seems more logical.
The only reason the republicans had the majority is they are excellent at demagoguing social issues like gay marriage and such, the tactics play on the voter's emotions instead of their rational thought. What's really sad is that it works.

No, the socialist party is not dead in America. It is alive a breathing, and has Hillary Clinton as it's leader.
Why is Hillary a socialist? She has stated in public that she wants to take corporate profits and give them to the people (by way of governmnet programs). Sound a little like Hugo Chavez? She also supports Universal Healthcare, or government paid medical services for everyone. Yes, Healthcare needs fixing in this country, but government supplied??? That's socialism. She also supports taxing the "Evil Rich" to make sure they pay their fair share. Guess what, The top 5% wealthiest people in the country pay %60 of all collected income tax. The bottom 50% of all wage earners only pay 13% of the collected income tax. How is that fair. So, Hillary wants to take more from the rich and give to the poor? Sounds like socialism through and through. So the socialist party is thriving in the USA, it is just running under the democrat party.

I'm a registered Republican and I generally vote rather conservatively, however, I keep an open mind and I vote for which ever candidate that appears to have a similar outlook as my own. There still is a socialist party in the United States, I'm not sure how strong their following is though.

The Socialist Party in the US never did have a large following. This is mostly due to the unreasonable fear of many Americans of the Communist Party. Socialist ideas still exist and even get to the legislature now and then. One example in Universal Health Care. Both of the major parties actually do suggest or pose socialist ideas occassionally and those ideas get backing from those who approve. There is no one party that all socialists vote for.

There has never been a truly viable socialist party in the US. Eugene Debs was the most viable American socialist politician, but, at best he reveice 6% of the presidential vote in 1912.
The concept of social democratic thought and politics are anathema to most American voters. Anyone who considers themselves socialist usually holds his nose and votes for Democrats.

Do you mean the official Socialist Party? As in, SPUSA?
They tend to be pretty radical and advocating abstaining from bourgeois politics. That is to say, they won't "hold their nose and vote for Democrats." This is more-less a Trotskyist position.
The Communist Party, or CPUSA, is a few degrees less radical, and stopped offering Presidential candidates a few years ago to opt instead for endorsing Democratic candidates that have a good relationship to the unions or labor interests generally.

Socialists will never get anything out of the Republican party. So I'd presume they'd vote Democratic, or they'd write in.

They vote for Republicans because all socialists, communists and fascist know that all three are nothing more than a few thugs ruling the masses.
As Karl Marx so aptly put it, "let me control the money and it makes no difference who writes the laws."
