Daimond Dave
Or the red rocker Sammy?

The problem with answering this has to do with time. The original Van Halen with David Lee Roth was a revolution in rock music that changed it forever and sent many many bands back to the drawing board and created scores of copy-cats. That can't be said for Sammy, although what he did on the Montrose album was huge for rock music..However, Sammy is a better singer, has longer staying power with his vocals and continues to be productive in music (and in life) while Dave has lost his powers and perspective it seems from my vantage point. So the short answer would be Dave if I could have him from 1979-80, but if Van Halen went out again on tour with Michael, Eddie, and Alex, I would probably want to see them with Sammy as it would be a better show from a music standpoint.

Diamond Dave For Sure! Van Halen Rocks

I like them both, but I would choose Sammy. He made the band more complete and added an extra guitar, and helped write all of the songs..All Dave did is sing whatever the boys handed him and "jumped" around..Also, they never had a number 1 album with Dave,( number 1 song but never a number 1 album)..They had 5 number 1's in a row with Sam..

Also, Sammy never needed Van Halen and was a successful artist before and after VH and still is to this day..What has Dave done without them beside beach boy covers and the tobacco road cover? Nada...Give me Sam

Not to take anything away from Sammy Hagar, His days playing with Montrose and his solo career prove what a heavy weight talent he is.
But there was no better of a front man for the band then David Lee Roth.
not the guy who became diamond dave, but the front man who still had his ego in check.

Sammy Hagar might have been more fun to hang out with, but the answer remains David Lee Roth. Van Halen never really recovered after they booted him.

I would have to say Sammy Haggar, David Lee Roth was good but nowadays hes just a washed up egotistical jerk off who still thinks Van Hallen is nothing without him. (even though Van Halen actually hit their peek with 5150 and OU812)
