You are at a restaurant and there are 8 items on the menu. You have to buy exactly 5 items from the menu (repeats allowed). For example, you can buy 5 of the same dish. How many different ways are there to order?

You will need to take each of the cases separately:

For example

case 1 - all 5 are repeats gives 8
case 2 - 4 are repeats one not gives 8^2
case 3 - 3 are one dish and 2 are another gives 8^2
case 4 - 3 are one dish, 1 is another and 1 is another = 8^3/2 to take the 2 individual dishes in any combination
case 5 - this goes on for quite a number of combinations then you add the results together.

There are 8 ways to choose each dish,
so the total number is 8*8*8*8*8 = 8^5 = 2^15 = 32768
possible dinners.

this is an order question...so look at each choice one at a time

first choice there are 8 to choose from
second choice there are 8 again
and so on for 5 choices

then there are 8^5 choices or 32768

Steiner is right, you have 8 choices to make 5 times, so it's 8^5.
