This is a tough question. It depends on the size of your hands, and a lot of other things, but I've just recently learned that Behringer makes a model with a USB port built-in to the guitar (and includes software) for a meager $129. For a beginner, that's a pretty good deal. The USB port means you can easily connect it directly to your computer for assistance in learning how to play - something I wish I had when I was learning how to play, but that was too long ago for that.

A good beginner acoustic guitar would be a nylon string guitar, which is much easier to play when getting used to guitars. However, nylon strings tend to go out of tune a little more often, so you will have to tune them before each time you play. A good starter electric guitar would be the epiphone les paul special II. You can find this in a store or at musiciansfriend.com. This was my first guitar and it has amazing tone for a budget guitar.

I'm not going to recommend one particular model because I don't know what style of music you plan on playing. Here's an article that would help you a lot: www.amillionguitars.com. It's about picking out the right guitar. Anyway, hope that helps. Good luck with music!!

Why not try a Bass?

Inexpensive to gear up with, plenty of good instruction classes around. Get the basics of music down and learn to play with a group (rhythm section is not bad) and create solos before you move on to more complicated instruments.

You can get some real success first, build on it and then move up.

Try your local edition of craigslist and buy something affordable but not expensive. Invest in the classes outlined below. You will be able to read not only notes but tab that you can use later when you move up.
