There are several types of live mouse traps you can buy if you don't want to kill it.
There are also several makes of stick pads to trap mouse on. Set it out and put something like peanut butter in center. When mouse gets on it he can't get off. Then you simply throw it away or you get him off it. The instructions will tell you what to use, then carry the little bugger to your ex-girlfriend's house and let it out.
There are also several different types of rat poison you can buy and use. The way they kill will not cause an odor after the mouse dies.
But personally it is a lot more fun taking it to your ex girlfriend's or ex wife's house and turning it loose when she isn't watching.

Your local retail stores like Wal-Mart, carries all kinds of mouse traps some that are surprisingly humane. The ones that I always use are the sticky board traps. If you feel like letting the mouse live then it will come off of the glue board with a little bit of vegetable oil. I however do not suggest that you let it go anywhere near your house as it will only come back inside.
Mice running loose in your kitchen is never a good thing. Mice have been contributed to passing along several diseases.
Do not however use poison not only because the mouse will die somewhere inside of your walls and it will smell terrible, but you could also accidentally poison a child or another small pet you may have.

The old saying that if you see one mouse there's a family of mice in hiding, is usually true.
Mice are able to squeeze through VERY small spaces, so what you may think is not big enough is probably more than enough space.
You need to get yourself some mouse traps, bait them with peanut butter, and wait for the mice to take the bait. You'll have to empty the traps once the mice are caught, so get over it if you are squeamish.
You could also invest in some rat poison, or call an exterminator. Professionals know exactly what to do.
As far as getting sick, mice aren't exactly hygenic little creatures, but I doubt you are going to get seriously ill. It's best to get them out of your house as soon as possible, though, because you don't want them crawling on your eating surfaces.

If you don't have any house animals, put some rat poison along the side of the walls near the hole in the wall.

If you don't want to use the rat poison, use a sticky mouse pad. You can put the mouse pad along the side of the wall with a little piece of food such as a cookie on the sticky mouse pad.

If you are tring to catch a mouse in a trap you should always place the trap along the side of the wall because when mice come out at night they usually run along the side of walls because they have poor eyesight.

dont catch it. just get some rat/mouse poison. Get the eatable ones, and spread them on places they like to hide, dark closets etc. Then let the magic happen. The mouse will eat it, digest it, and goes into its blood system and kill it, if not it will kill the babies as well, stoping it from reproducing. Wicked stuff. Once the rat dies, follow the smell and clear the mouse and be mouse free till the next invasion. But of course you can go for the less cruel way and opt for a mouse trap.

get a cat, its the best way.
Or just use cat calls, like meowing. Once a prey item knows theres a predator around, it'll be very very cautious about going out of it's home. Or u cud burn incense and put the incense on the mouse hole you found. The incense should smoke out the mouse.

Get a 12 gauge shotgun, load it and sit very still. When the little mousie sticks his head out, shoot it. While you're at it, shoot any Baktirians that you see. I hate them little suckers, too. Don't buy any mouse traps, tho... they make the job too easy.
