I just ordered The Total Money Makeover book by Dave Ramsey. I really like the idea of his program and can't wait to read his book and get started. I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to give me their opinion, and perhaps their stories of success, on the book and program? Thank you!

We have been using his program for a year and a half. It is the first time in our marriage we aren't having money fights! We still have a ways to go to get debt free but we are making HUGE strides and we don't miss the credit card. We are working on paying off the cars and then the student loan. The emergency fund has helped us a ton. Now we barely touch it. Now (since we have been doing this for awhile) we don't do the debt snowball that month when we have an emergency and just pay for the emergency and then the next month we start the debt snowball again. That is a little frustrating but no stress- we have the money to pay for the emergency :-) (Example- went in for an oil change and tire check, left $700 later with new brakes and 2 new tires and an oil change; we just wrote the check and barely blinked.)

His program is great- you can do it!

My husband and I started on the baby steps in January. Getting on a budget and knowing where our money was going has given us complete control. We've got our starter emergency fund, and are working on paying off our debts. We've paid off about 20% of our debt this year already. We will be debt free by Feb. 2010, if not earlier. We can't wait to be able to scream "WE'RE DEBT FREEEEE"

It's the first time we've ever truly been able to see progress. It's not always easy because you can't do a lot of things you've done in the past. We've had to pretty much stop going out to eat and we can't shop the way we used to, but that's what got us into trouble in the first place... spending more than we made.

Now we're living within our means and cleaning up the mess we've made so we never have to go through this again.

I highly recommend the plan and the book. Good luck with it!

Dave Ramsey has helped a lot of people by making personal finance a part of the nation's dialog, unlike the shock jocks and political hacks that seem to dominate the airwaves.

I'm not there yet, but we have our baby emergency fund and we are pretty darn close to being debt free except the house. We'll be yelling "We're debt free!" on the air within a year!!!
