1st, what's a 'looser'?
Now, companies constantly update product lines to keep them fresh so retailers will continue to keep refreshing their walls and consumers continue craving these luxury items.
The other equipment killer comes via mergers and acquisitions. When smaller companies get market share, the bigger ones buy them out and either incorporate the acquired company's goods in their line or they just kill the brand and/or model.
Your beloved 6001 sticks (I too used them until 93) are an example of this common practice. Canadien was acquired by Karhu which ran the brand alongside others such as jofa, titan and koho.
However, when CCM and Karhu merged, the proceeding consolidation of brands eventually led to the death of Canadien. I should note that the Jofa 'Gretzky' lid was never hecc approved so its death was inevitable, but other unfortunate casualties of this merger were Canadien model and Jofa 686 model gloves.
Additional mergers between CCM (the hockey company) and Reebok led to the demise of Jofa and CCM will be next unlees the company puts some real marketing and design support behind the brand..
My ultimate killed product is the Daoust 501 skate. Daoust was acquired by Canstar (Bauer and Cooper's umbrella brand) in the early 90's because of the amazing success the small skate brand was having. Canstar downgraded the materials used in the skate, but still sold Daoust 301 and 501 models (later renumbered 333 and 555) until Canstar was acquired by Nike in 95.
Again, subsequent consolidation led to the death of Daoust, Cooper and Micron. In this instance, several NHL players still demanded Daoust 501s. Bauer continued to build a 'no name' skate for a number of years for diehard Daoust guys like Mike Keane and Scott Young.
Man do I miss those skates. Sz 9 if anyone has a pair laying around in the garage, lol.
EDIT: Lubers, your sniffer's serving you well. RBK is trying to keep the CCM brand alive by having separate management groups run the two brands. Unfortunately, there is no vision present on the CCM side and the decision to prop up the Vector sub-brand is a questionable one.
Additionally, the gong show that is the CCM marketing copy reads like a cheesy 80's jock flick, which doesn't bode well for brand's hopes of rejuvenation. Nike Bauer is about to tgihten its stranglehold on the market...

I also used the Canadien 6001 sticks. When I was in college in the 80's (yes, I am old) they let us choose from 2 models and select our curve and lie. I would love to get my hands on a half dozen or so of those. Given my age, that would probably last until my retirement!
Zap has some great points. CCM/Reebok has just topped the Daoust debacle IMO. They have discontinued the Tacks line of skates, which until this season was the oldest living brand of skates. It is just another example of the things that Zap has pointed out. From this point on, all further CCM/Reebok skates will be made under the Vector model name. The design of the skate may end up being the same, but the loss of the tradition is huge in my eyes.

Yes, but it is to improve things. I personally really liked the older Sher-Wood goalie sticks that were heavier. They have done a nice job making them better, but it still feels odd to me to use the newer lighter sticks. It just takes me awhile to find another design and model that I like.
