I agree, long live humanism. We need to get fundamentalist Christians out of schools and out of politics. So true, these bible thumping hypocrites support every war of aggression. They support the full right wing agenda of gay bashing, union busting and busting constitutional rights.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a non-Christian becoming president of the USA. The USA is very nearly a theocracy already; you can't win an election there unless you're deeply Christian, or at least claim to be.
Big corporations, the Church and government are together in an unholy alliance. This is the precursor to a fascist state.

When Joe Blow on the street says I am a Christian he means
I bought the entire lie and follow a guy they made up out of whole cloth to control Europe and start a mulitiude of wars
The church was the government and they did it with the authority of scriptuure they made up from a guy they invented and then only told the masses what it said in Latin occasionally translating into the common lauguage as required
When the upper echelon say I am a christian they mean
I recognise the old abusive government (theocracy) as the mother of the current government and will not rock the boat but make sure the new and the old abusive governmet work towrds the same ends - War enslavement etc
Is Bush a Christian ? Yes in name only as is the Pope aka King of 900 million people - the greatest hoax in the world -
So in the US can someone be elected to the new government without proper respect to the old one -
No

Several already have.
More than one president was widely considered at the time to be a heretic by the religious authorities of the day, due to their non-mainstream personal beliefs.
Most were Diests, believing in a supreme power, but not necessarily in all the trappings of christianity. Do some research, you'd be amazed who the first one to be labeled this way was...
If you're looking for another established religion to be elected, perhaps Barrak Hussien Obama can ring your bell as the islamic he most certainly is by the rules of that faith, no matter what he may say on his revised resume.
I wouldn't hold my breath though.

I pray for that all the time . As the one person who is praying to the proper and correct Creator of all things I find it disturbing that we have so many brands of religion screwing things up all the time .
Lets get some people in office that can do the job right and stop all the rhetoric and stealing .
Religion is a license to steal and many of those who practice it are no better then common thieves .
So a non Christian would be great as far as I am concerned and we need to elect worshipers of 187 .

unlike babe's armchair social science--
it's not likely that a person who is not a christian will be elected--so long as there are people who feel the need to have "someone like me" in the office.
keep in mind also, 25% of the country reports itself as "catholic." and yet, most of the presidents have been protestant.
it's closer to 80% christian, 15% non-religious, and 5% other religion.
i'm also fairly certain that many of the "christians" are not practicing. people who are raised a certain way often hold on to the title.

Not today at least. I agree we should get fundamentalist Christians out of government, schools and politics - but as long as we have the GOP that ain't gonna happen!

I think whoever the dems put up will be the next president of this country. I dont see any good contenders on the repub. side. There is still a very very long time until the decision comes up.

I have found the majority of 'Christians' to be hypocrites so it's no surprise to me that they would vote for one of their own.
I was trying to think of a kinder way to put that but there isn't really any other way to put it.
