I was trying to install a new hardrive on my desktop and I accidently broke off a pin off my hardrive, is that going to cause serious trouble to my hardrive?

If it is a 24-pin connector, many of the pins are "dummy" pins for standard connectors - they just need to all be there but only a few of them are essential to operation. So try to use it anyway and see if it works. If there is any critical data make sure to back it up to DVD. But chances are you will be OK.

Look at the website for your harddrive manufacturer - many of them will include pinout diagrams so you can tell what that pin was for.

The chances that the particular pin has no function are very slim if it is part of the cable connection.
If it is an upright pin on the circuit board it is probably as test point and should have no effect.
The only way to find out without analyzing the pin out configuration is to try and use it.

You have 2 choices -

1 - try using it and if it works, okay fine. If not, buy another hard drive.
2 - Save yourself some trouble down the line and buy another hard drive. (return this one if you can)

By the way - how did you manage to do that?
