I have 3 down comforters at home and I've NEVER had them professionally cleaned.. I wash them at home. I have a super large capacity washer (Top loader).. I've never had a problem.. The nice thing about a down comforter is that when wet it shrinks down to nothing.. I use the warm/cold gentle cycle and I use the rinse 2x.. I sometimes on the larger comforters Queen/King will run it through a spin cycle an extra time to get all the water out.. Dry it in your own dryer with a couple of tennis balls, to fluff it up... If your home washer is too small take it to the laundrymat and use the double load machines' I've washed all three of my down comforters in one machine... For under $5.. good luck..Also, it helps to get a duvet cover for you comforters.. that way you can just wash the cover and not the comforter all the time.. I wash mine about 1 every 3 months..

When washing down comforters is necessary, it is best to leave it to a professional cleaner. While down can be dry-cleaned, the results are better if it is instead cleaned with specially designed solutions. If, however, you prefer to do it yourself, you will need to use an oversized front-loading commercial grade machine. If needed, you can use non-chlorine bleach. Do not use your home machine. It is not designed for cleaning large down comforters. Using it could lead to damaging your comforter—or your machine.

After washing down comforters, you should dry them in a large commercial dryer on medium heat. Although this could take several hours, do not try to speed up the process by using high heat. This can burn the comforter. Even on medium heat, it is important to check periodically and make sure the unit is not overheating. Be patient during the long drying process -- failure to properly dry your down comforter could lead to mildew growth.

Get that dry cleaning kit from the grocery store, or you can wash it on the gentle cycle, tumble dry on low. Works for me. Oh, and use some liquid fabric softener in the wash so it comes out smelling clean and fresh.

I would never put a down comforter, and even down pillows ,through the wash. Take it to a reputable drycleaner in your area and have it done there.

No, they need to be professionally done.
