With Steinbrenner the Yankees are always buyers.

At this point, which is still early, the Yankees are once again buyers. This team is going to only gett hotter as the season goes on. The Red Sox were at a point were many thought the A.L. East was all but in the bag, but the Yankees have cut into the lead. I think the Yankees will focus on a DH such as Jim Thome, Adam Dunn, or even Frank Thomas (don't be surprised). They'll also pick up a good setup man such as Brad Lidge.

Alas, they are buyers. It's a shame, really. They know how to produce talent, but they rely on the bank cheque to win. If they sold or traded off some dead wood, gave some of their talent a chance (the farm system came up with B. Williams, Rivera, Jeter, Posada, and Cano, so they CAN produce talent), and patiently waited a year to go crazy in the market for talent they usually don't need (Abreu was a stupid choice when they desperately needed a pitcher that year) they could be solid for 6 or 7 years. Steinbrenner is still figuring baseball out, though, so it won't happen.

They are definately buyers. But, there is very little to buy, and they have very little to offer. The amount and quality of people that are available this year via trade is VERY thin. The Yanks would love to add a starter and a good set up man for Rivera. They are also looking for a solid back up catcher. The problem is...EVERYONE is looking for a starter such as the Red Sox, Braves, Mets, Phils, and possibly the Angels. Most of those teams have better prospects to offer than NY. So, you'll probably see NY make a move for a David Weathers type pitcher to help out their bullpen problems, and a catcher...no major moves...just a little tweak. That may be all they need to make the playoffs. Don't expect them to go far in October though with that pitching staff.

I imagine they are buyers, as George can't stand to be out of the playoff hunt, even for a year. Not that I think they should, they could really benefit from shipping off some of their aging hitters for some good, young pitching prospects. If they can get anything for Abreu or Damon they shouldn't hesitate.

trades consist of both buying and selling. I imagine they would like to dump Abreu, Farnsworth, and Giambi and pick up a 1st baseman a DH and a reliever or two.
