The theme of the sonnet is the comfort that comes from lies. He knows his mistress is unfaithful, but he allows her the lie...just as he knows he's past his prime, but he lets the lies she tells him about how good he looks and performs bathe his ego...because it makes him feel better. So, they both know they are both lying, but they choose to accept the lies because it makes them both feel better. They are both long in the tooth and are too wise to actually believe the lies, they just feel more comfortable telling each other the lies so that they both can hear the words they want to hear and pretend to believe them.

The speaker is self conscious about growing older. He believes that his mistress knows of his age, and he worries. She knows, but decides to keep it from him. He knows that she lies about these things, and that she is also seeing other people. He can't comprehend why she would hide such things from him. He also can't comprehend why he can't come to terms with his growing old. But then comes to realize that maybe the reason he lies to her, is because he is afraid of judgment, and perhaps that is why she lies to him. Despite this dishonesty, they have built sexual relationship based on their needs.
