A paid lobbyist is someone who advocates the position of their client. It doesn't mean that the person holds that position themself.

Now, you might think a person should only take jobs where their client's ideological goals match the person's own beliefs. But not everyone has that luxury, especially attorneys.

So, if you want to blame him, blame him for something that he believes, or a vote that he made while in the Senate. Don't blame him because he was working for someone you don't like.
