They buy them and then drive them to the country on weekends where the rest of us moved to avoid the loud sounds of the city. Up and down the backroads blaring this stupid noise. It's simply noise pollution and should stay in the city.

Ask any policeman - police are trained to not outrun their siren. That is a ridiculous excuse to say it is for saving your life.

The exhause point to the rear so the roar of the bike is out the rear of the bike. A siren on a squad car points to the front for a specific reason. To let traffic know he is coming. The arguement that it is for safety is specious.

I knew the answer I just wanted to do a statistical analysis of the idiots that are loud on their big old bad bikes.

Unless you ride a Harley you would'nt understand. There's nothing like the wind the ride and the sound of man and machine all working together. So get on your Jap crap plug in the headset and listen to the calming sounds of lawrence welk. Maye if your lucky someday I'll be cranking down your street about 2:00 AM and awake the rooster in your backyard.

Most gear heads like the sound of engines. Unfortunately some of them are insensitive to others and push past the realisitic limits for volume. I for one love the sound of a nice big V-twin, but I don't need to wake the neighbors to enjoy that.

Though I have to say, if you're hearing this "stupid noise" as much as you make it sound I don't think it's some guy from the city. It's probably one of your neighbors. There aren't anywhere near as many ridiculously loud bikes as there used to be. So this guy must be close.

So you dont hear the Harley coming up on you? I certainly can. Maybe you should get your ears checked.

A motorcycle is smaller than a vehicle and while you are driving your eyes are looking for things of similar size and speed moving up on you. A motorcycle isnt going to immediately stand out based on what your eyes are feeding to your brain. If you can hear it then you can be alert for it. Look twice and save a life.

Either way public property is public property and they have the right to ride wherever they wish. I dont want to hear anyones screaming children but I put up with it in public areas because they have just as much right to be there as I do. I would really enjoy seeing someone tell someone else to take their brats home as by your logic they should be confined *where they belong*.

Safety aside the only thing that saved one young mans life one night on I-595 was the fact I could hear his bike. For whatever reason this gent felt it necessary to ride with no lights on an all black bike with all black safety gear through a dark stretch between the turnpike and university drive. I heard him before I saw him just as I was about to change lanes and swipe this kid right off his bike.

Mine aren't really any louder. But they do look a lot better. As to your country side comment. You went to get away from the noise? How completley self centered of you. I go to the country to see the country. If it reall y is up and down the road all day. It's proably someone who lives near you. Have a cop sit and wait. If it is over the allowed limit he gets a ticket. If not well to bad. There is over 9 billion people on the planet. You are just gonna have to put up with the stupid ones.

I live way out in the country too.My neighbors and myself all ride loud Harley's so maybe you should move back to the city or buy a loud motorcycle. What makes you think people in the country don't like loud motorcyles? I've lived here for over 40 years and I'm the new guy on the block.

I love motorcycles, ridden them all my life. But I like mine quiet. It let's you really enjoy the scenery. By the way, according to the Hurt study the most extensive study on motorcycle accidents every done the majority of accidents involve a driver pulling out or turning left in front of a motorcycle. Since the sound of a motorcycle does not travel in front of you loud pipes DO NOT save lives. The main reason people like loud pipes? Cause they are jerks who think only of themselves

Have you ever riden on a motorcycle and had the nut job talking on the cell phone (or with the radio set on 10) next to you, then changes lanes without looking?
If so, you'd appreciate the pipes giving notice that you are there

Depending on the bike... The fast bike change their exhaust mostly to lighter models that will also increase the flow of the engine and give a boost in horse power. More HP plus less weight = faster.

Harleys have loud exhausts for similar reasons as far as the flow part goes, but also because its kind of a signal to other drivers around them that there is a bike next to them... possibly in ther blind spot.

Part of the fun of riding a motor cycle is the feeling of freedom, wind in your hair and the bugs in your teeth. Thats why I ride outside the city. Riding in traffic blows.

I will tell you why I have loud pipes on my bike. Because there are way to many idiot cagers driving around, not paying attention because they are to busy eating, talking on cell phones, shaving, putting on make up, lighting a cigarette.....
Should I go on? People who say that loud pipes do not save lives are full of ****. Loud pipes draw people's attention to you. The same thing that driving with your head light on, your horn or reflective tape on your helmet or bike, is supposed to accomplish. Would you remove any of those safety items because they annoyed other people? I can't tell you how many times that I have had people cut me off or pull out in front of me with the stock pipes. With the loud pipes on I can count the times in one hand. To the people that complain they couldn't ride with pipes that loud, you should do like a lot of us other bikers and invest in some good ear plugs. They drastically cut down on wind and exhaust noise and let me actually hear better! So to all the people who are annoyed by loud pipes, would you rather be annoyed or in a state of trauma because you just killed someone? Think about someone else other than yourself for a change!
EDIT:
Ross M, all that study tells us, is that the majority of people on bikes are in accidents because of drivers not paying attention. Now if the study would have compared which of the bikes that were in these accidents had loud pipes and which ones didn't, then you could say that loud pipes don't save lives. How can you logically say that sound doesn't travel in front of you? The last time I stood in front of my bike I could hear it running. Just because the exhaust is pointed toward the back, doesn't mean that is the only way sound travels. I promise you that if you had a 1200 Harley with straight pipes in your blind spot and he got on it, you would hear him even though you are in front of him. Just because you FEEL something is true, "Loud pipes don't save lives!" doesn't make it true. Back up your point with facts, instead of spreading misinformation. I don't mean to attack you personally, this is just something I feel strongly about. I am tired of people thinking I am a jerk, just because I choose to protect myself from inattentive idiots!

They are inconsiderate louts is why, and Harley owners are the worst offenders but not the only offenders.

If someone didn't learn not to be obnoxious by age 12, there's no teaching them.

I've ridden motorcycles all my life, and very big bikes, but there is a difference between acceptable noise and useless, stupid noise.
