83 bayliner with volvo penta motor: wont stay running ,?

Question

when you give it gas it sounds like its just sucking air. it idles for about 2 seconds then dies. New points, cleaned the carb, there is one plug on the bottom of carb hard to get at, could it be the prob?

The carburator needs to be removed and cleaned properly. You also might want to check the fuel filters and pump, either way it isn't getting gas.

before you get to far into it try dumping 2 cans of Seafoam into the fuel. This product can be found at automotive retailers near you.
