Can somebody explain:

Write the terminating decimal in common fractional notation.

0.025

The answer is 1/40.

Can somebody explain how to get the answer and also give me a little info on common fraction notation?

There are three decimal places in 0.025: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

So you are actually reducing the fraction 25/1000.
Divide numerator and denominator by 25. 1/40

You can also tell that three decimal places will be thousandths because a thousand has three zeroes.

Rewrite the decimal number as a fraction, then simplify it if possible. 0.025 = 25/1000 (the number of zeros in the denominator is the same as the number of decimal places). Now divide numerator and denominator by the GCD, which is 25. You end up with 1/40.

All terminating decimals can be written like this. Repeating decimals can be written using 9's in the denominator, like this: 0.3333..... is equal to 3/9. 0.242424..... is equal to 24/99. 0.047047047... is equal to 47/999. The numerator is the repeating group, and the denominator consists of the same number of 9's as there are digits in the repeating unit.

If there is one or more leading zeroes in the repeating decimal, the denominator of the common fraction will have those zeros at the end, like this: 0.0555... is equal to 5/90; 0.0454545... is equal to 45/990; 0.006666.... is equal to 6/900; and 0.00324324324... is equal to 324/99900. Study those and you'll see the pattern.

Try to find similar number when dealing with fractions. Think of a quarter for example.

Quarter =.25 = 1/4

Finding a common number is key with terminating decimals (meaning, they're not repeating like 1/3). We have our similar number, .25, so we just need to move that pesky decimal point. The trick with multiplying by 10s (or 1/10th) is that you're moving the decimal point forward or backward (to the left, or right).

In this case you want to move the decimal one place to the left, so you'll use 1/10. (if we want to move it to the right, we'd multiply by 10).

so, 1/4 x 1/10 = 1/40. Or, similarly, .25 x .1 = .025

Try writing it as a ratio. For this problem:
.025/1 = 1/x. Cross multiply and you get 1=.025x. Calculate 1/.025 and you get x=40. If you can't calculate then this try this: If you know that 1/4 of 1 is .25, then if you divide both sides by ten and you get 1/40 = .025.

.25 is 25/100 : .025 is 25/1000
so you have to show that 25/1000 is 1/40
divide the numerator and denominator by 25
25/1000 = 1/40
Some notes: 1/10 is 0.1
1/100 = 0.01
1/1000 = 0.001 etc
