Help! I can start my tiller, but can't keep it running. It is an older tiller, heay duty. I can start my tiller, but it turns off after about 30 seconds. I took apart the carburator and gas tank and rinsed everthing in gas and put it back together. I changed the spark plug and oil. No luck. It starts when i put carb fluid down the carb. then kicks off after about 30 or so seconds. I have no idea what is wrong. Please help. :(

Bad gas
Stuck needle valve if carburetor has a float system.
Clogged gas filter
Clogged air filter
Ripped, decayed, or wrinkled gasket for the carburetor, or gas tank(if that type of tank)
Just a worn out carburetor
And if it only will run on the ether then you go into spark problems
Bad plug
Bad wire
Bad coil or magneto(which ever you have)
Bad gap on the magneto to flywheel magnets
**Some old small engine units also have points and a condenser under a cover that's under the flywheel. The flywheel would have to come off,(which ain't easy), then there's a small round cover(3 or 4 inches in diameter) over the top of the engine with the armature shaft coming through the middle of it.
Their are a lot of possibilities if what the problem could be.

If it's only running for about 30 seconds, it is running out the 'prime' fuel and the carb isn't providing enough fuel to keep the engine running.
The carb needs to be cleaned with carb cleaner and rebuilt.
Since it is an older model I suspect there is a diaphragm inside that is old and not functioning anymore, so a good clean and rebuild should get you to the end of the row!

It sounds like a carburator issue. The carb needs to be removed, disassembled, and soaked in a good parts cleaner. Than blow it out with compressed air and make sure all passages are clear. Reassemble with a rebuild kit. It will run like new. Rinsing the parts in gas is a waste of time and gas besides being dangerous.

theres a diaphram inside the carb that kind of looks like a screen it flaps back and forth as gas goes through it clean it out but becareful not to tear it. also if it has a hole in it, it will need to be replaced cause it will alow to much gas to go through a flood the engine. also make sure your gas cap is vented if not the flow of gas will stop. you should have cleaned the carb with a spray can of carb cleaner instead of gas. did you clean out the gas line from the tank to the carb ??

If it is not gravity fed, it could be the fuel pump. Hard to tell without a picture.
