I seem to remember that they were talking about it at the time. If the passengers rushed the cockpit, and there was only a few men with knives, why did it go into the ground?

Our government would have shot down the plane had they gotten their soon enough but unfortunately they were in a state of confusion. But airspace guidelines would have been to escort the plane to the nearest air base and if the pilot refused the plane would have been shot down.
United 93 crashed before it hit its intended target which was the capitol.

Conspiracy theories are common among people who are easily influenced or those who trust "sources" of questionable origin or qualifications.

When you read such conspiracy theories on the internet, say, in a blog, how do you know if the person stating such things has done research? A ten-year old who just wanted to fool people?

Sometimes shocking truths about government actions are revealed, for instance, recently it was revealed that in the 60's there was a plan to assasinate Castro. That was not terribly surprising since the poitical leaders at the time were more or less at war with Castro and his backers, the Soviet Union.

To state that the moon landing was faked or that the US shot down United flight 93 requires a great deal of imagination, and proof is non-existent. So even if you believe that the government does evil things, stating that they would shoot down a plane (and there is no evidence of that, in spite of the frequent cell phone calls during the last hour) will make people wonder if they could sell you the Brooklyn Bridge.

Standing US policy is to shoot down any aircraft entering Washington DC air space if it can not be diverted, so yes it would have been shot down had it gotten close enough. However there are no fighter bases anywhere near the crash site, and in the state the government and military were in at that point I doubt they even knew for sure where that plane was at the time it crashed.

No one had a clue what was going on at the time, they were trying to deal with the towers and the Pentagon hit at the time. As an Air Force member my self I can tell you that the state of confusion of pretty much world wide and lasted a good while. Other then the defensive caps that formed over DC and other High Value Targets nationwide after the second plane hit it was more damage assement then anything else going on.

I've been to the Flight 93 Memorial in PA twice.

It would not make any difference it the government did shoot the plane down. None.

The events of that day are now history and left exactly as they happened and are portrayed. Those people knew what was happening to them and they still met their deaths trying to fight the enemy till the end.

If the government splashed the plane before it dove into the ground it is a mute point.

I saw United 93. But now i am getting confused. In the movie, don't they portray one of the terrorists as pretending he was wearing a bomb on himself. I can't really remember about the rumor concerning the US government shooting the plane down. Yes, once maybe. What I can remember and did witness (I lived in NYC at the time and volunteered) is the very strange atmosphere that FEMA gave out as soon as it took over the "rescue operation." They pretty much stopped any search and rescue personel that were not FEMA from going down to the WTC, they controlled many of us... I mean, most of us understood that they ought to be very digilent, but in this situation, they acted extremely paranoid. Firemen, police, ... even noticed this change in attitude as if.... the government agency was trying to cover up something and making sure we wouldn't find anything... I know this sounds kind of "insane" but it actually what most of the people who were there will tell you.

It was brought down by those on board the plane. It would have been shot down had it gotten close to Washington D.C. There were fighters in the air at the time looking for United 93.

I doubt that the U.S. Air Force shot it down because our fighters couldn't get there fast enough even if it was known what was happening. It would have been shot down if it were about to enter a populated area and the fighters were there.
Why did it crash after the cockpit was rushed? The terrorists must have been prepared for that possibility,

In the back of my mind, I know it is a possibility we shot it down... because there was no other choice, and it could have killed thousands on the ground.

But I like the story of Todd Beamer and the others being hero's and stopping the terrorists much better. It is a better ending to a horrible day.

We were caught with our pants down that day. We were not prepared... we probably still aren't. I really doubt we shot it down, but there is a very slight possibility we did.

Shooting the plane down was an option, if it could not be escorted to another airport.
Trying to see the situation from the terrorists point of view, they were being rushed, about to loose control of the airliner and unable to crash it into a high value target. At least they will take a bunch of us with them if they crash the plane.
