I have an old tiller. It starts but won't stay started. I tried to clean out the carburator and gas tank. I basically took it apart and rinsed everything in gas and then put it back together. It starts, but turns off after about 30 seconds. I have no idea what is wrong? Can you help me please... :(

It definitely sounds like fuel starvation. A few ideas. Does it have a fuel filter? Check for debris in the bottom of the tank or in the fuel line. A deteriorated fuel line can be partially blocked with a piece of it's own lining. Carburetor float valve may be sticking. Varnish in the carburetor jets will not wash out with gasoline. It is probably gravity feed from the tank to the carb but some engines have an impulse fuel pump that may be bad.

Try loosening the fuel cap and get it running. If it stays running, replace the fuel cap and you're done. The vents in old caps get clogged with dust and rust over the years and when no air can get into the tank to replace the fuel leaving the tank, you get a vacuum lock that can resemble all the possible faults the other folks have enumerated. Good luck.

Sound like you need a carburetor kit. If you let the gas stay in the carburetor for several months, it will leave a gummy substance in it, which causes the float to stick. Always let the the machine run out of fuel before storing.

the same thing happened to our generator after some long periods of nonuse. The seals were bad. Also, have you changed your spark plug? You can always till by hand...it will make your garden much smaller!
