I have a computer, everything in it was brought seperately, but the motherboard is stock (not sure what brand).

The hard drive itself is from Western Digital (40GB)
There's a secondary 250 HD (not plugged in)
CD-R/RW and DVD Drives (1 of each)

Here's the situation... I turn the computer on and everything is working normally. Usually it will continue to work normally until I lock my session and leave the computer for a few hours and when I come back the computer has restarted itself.

Also when I'm working on it every so often, I can hear the hard drive stop spinning then begin again, and of course when the hard drive stops spinning the computer locks up and I'm forced to restart it.

I've done virus/spyware/trogan scans and nothing so it's not a virus... any other ideas? I'm open for ideas

Sounds like it could be the hard drive going bad. How old is the hard drive?

Follow up: It does sound like your drive is failing. you may want to get a new hard drive and hook that into your system as a slave drive and retrieve all your files you have to have before it fails completely

This is because your power settings allow the spinning-down of the hard drive after a certain period of time. In your control panel, go to power options and check your power schemes. You'll see there's an option there to turn off hard disks.

If you're running on a desktop, you can probably have it never spin down the hard-drive, as this will happen anyway if the system goes into standby. The reason the drive will spin down when you are using it is because the drive itself is idle.

Edit: If of course your power settings don't allow for the turning off of the drive, then as people have mentioned above, it could be the sign of a faulty drive, or less likely, power supply.

This sounds like is your Windows going into power saver mode. You can check this by Right clicking the Desktop and choosing Properties->Screensaver tab->Power button. Change your Turn off Hard Disks to Never and your System Standby to Never. If this doesn't work, let us know.

Go to power management. and then fix you timing there. put never in every field under the always on field. and about hard disk stopping it happens if your hard disk gets overheated. sometime it happens because of the brand it came from. You can add an extra cooler for the hard drive. or else you can do the system check to see if there is bad sectors in your hard disk. best of luck. Thanks.

It might just be a bad drive (damaged) try taking it to a professional ; if you cant fix it just get another hard drive and move the files you have there (to) the new one.

I suggest you back up everything you need from the internal hard drive. It is likely that the hard drive is going to fail.
