I have to take my car over to Spain and Portugal for weeks at a time and the little plastic ones I get from Halfords aren't cheap, and go black!
Someone said they're not really necessary... Any advice gratefully received!

Yes they are necessary to meet the countries "construction and use" regulations. If you have a pattern they can be cut from any opaque material. Be just a bit careful if you have plastic headlights or very high power bulbs as the adhesive might leave a mark. The real ones are supposed to have a heat reflective layer so they don't get affected by the heat

Hi a cheaper alternative is using electrical tape, put your car facing a wall then stick small strips of the tape to the lights so that your beam pattern is pointing the other way,
Hope this helps
