This question keeps being asked so many time I wonder if it is a deliberate ploy by creationist just to wear us out!
No, we were never monkeys. We are not descended from monkeys. We and other modern apes share a common ancestor with monkeys, from which we both evolved.
This is a fact, proved from comparative anatomy and genetics.
Those that ask 'why are there still apes and monkeys then?' simply do not understand evolution. It is not some predetermined plan, the result of which is that everything is striving to evolve into humans!! It is merely a powerful process of selection, that produces wondrous variety and amazing forms of life!

Sigh...
Firstly Darwin never implied that we evolved from monkeys, in fact he never implied anything about human evolution, other people just applied it to themselves and started sprouting Victorian garbage about monkeys leading to mass hysteria.
Secondly, we did not evolve from modern day monkeys, monkeys and us share a distant common ancestor, we stemmed from this ancestor who was certainly a mammal but is now extinct. We are not classified as monkeys, we are classified as apes. Apes and monkeys diverged evolutionarily many millions of years ago.

Humans and monkeys do NOT share a common ancestor.
This is a philosphoical idea that is not supported by the actual evidence. All fossils hominids are clearly human or clearly ape.
Don't be fooled by atheist propoganda masquerading as science, check the evidence for yourself.
Loads of thought provoking articles here.

I can think of a few people who are still at the monkey stage of evolution and they seem to be in charge of the country!

We never evolved from the monkeys that are around today.
It was a different species which of course are not around today, as we are them!

Evolution is not only a process where if there is a species which has developed because of the other than the other species depletes, in another instant the species will remain. meaning yes we were

its like a branch of a tree
the main branch has two off shoots and one evolved into human and the other in to chimps
so we had the same ancestors but evolved into different species
