If your disposal does not run, push the reset button located on the bottom of the unit. If after you turn it on and it still doesn't run but you hear humming, you'll need to buy a tool from your local hardware store that is specifically designed to free up the blade. Make sure that the power is off at the breaker and use duct tape on the end of a pencil or something long, sticky side out, and use it to retrive the debris. Next, if you have a dishwasher, remove the waste line from the nipple on the disposal and use a screwdriver to clear out the nipple. If you have an "air gap" (thats the tube like part that sticks out of the top of your sink with a chrome cap that your dishwasher drain line and disposal waste line are attached to) remove the lines, remove the cap and retaining nut and run hot water through it and use the screwdriver to remove any solid debris. Lastly, check your main waste line. It's the large diameter pipe located and coming out of the bottom of the disposal. Loosen the nuts and remove the "P" trap (the "U" shaped pipe) and clean out any debris. I hope this helps.

Disconnect the power. On the bottom of the unit you should see an indentation for a Hex wrench. Stick the wrench in and turn it back and forth until it turns freely.

Start by unplugging it, then shine a flashlight into it and see if you can see the culprit. You'll then have to reach in there and remove the obstacle with your hands and occasionally a small pair of pliers.
