225 is the width of the tire in mm, 55 is the aspect ratio (it is 55% as tall as it is wide) and the 16 is the rim size the tire fits on.

The first number is the section width at the widest point of the tire in milimeters. Second number is the aspect ratio. This is the section height divided by the section width. The third number is the rim diameter in inches. There is usually an "R" between the 2nd and 3rd numbers and that identifies the construction as radial.

225= width
55= hight/ percentage of width
16= rim size
only 16 inch tires will fit on 16 inch rims. If you have room and want different hight or width you can change accordingly but your spedo is calabrated for the factory size tire. If you put taller tires on your spedo will say you are going slower then you really are. If you put shorter tires on it will say you are going faster then you are. You can have the spedo recalabrated if you change them drastically. Hope this is helpful.

the previous guy said it all but......
There is also a date stamped outside of the tire.
it's coded but never the less you need to be aware of it.
Do not buy old tires, get fresh tires. Old tires get hard fast and brittle and will NOT last that long.

most people pay attention only to the 16 so it fits their car.
the width only matters if you have little room or the height matters only if you have little height.

16 is YOUR key number. If you have a 16 wheel then use a 16 tire.
it's like shoe size.

sure the width matters but as long as it is 16 and your car is 16 it should fit ok.
