i believe it is when listing. so would this sentence be fine.
My dog likes to do many things, such as: blah, blah, and blah.

would this be correct then, since the first part is an i.c.?

dat would be incorrect, that is what you use a semi-colon for ( ; )

colons are for humongous list like a 3 week supply grocery list

to start a list, give an example, or to add extra information, such as: my dog likes to do many things: he is very inquisitive. (although a semicolon may be more appropriate there, whichever you think is best, theyre almost interchangeable. however the semicolon is, as it looks, halfway between a comma and a period so just a pause)

Normally you would use a colon after eating meals. The food would proceed from the stomach into the colon.
