By pressing the button you die instantly. But it does however guarantee the survival of Planet Earth for another 10,000 years.

It's a now or never moment. The button is only there for 10 seconds, then the opportunity vanishes forever.

The fact is nothing in life is guaranteed hence my question to guarantee Earth's survival for 10,000 years. No more detail is required as nobody knows how life on Earth will be for the next 10,000 years. It is simply a would you or wouldn't you question to which you can elobarate on your answer of course!

No, because you didn't mention the quality of life of all of earths inhabitants. If the earth would continue on the road that it is on now I certainly would not press the button.

Who's to say that the Earth wouldn't survive another 10,000, 20,0000 or even 10 million years anyway. If it later turns out that the Earth might have lastest another 50,000 years then I'd go down in history as the man who cheated the people of earth out of 40,000 years!
The stakes would have to be a little higher before I'd press that button!

Sod that! Planet Earth is going to survive for billions of years! Whether our society will last is another question, but even then, what good will that do me when I'm dead?
Now, if you had put the question so that life on Earth was facing immediate danger, and by pressing the button I could sacrifice myself to save it, that would be a different thing, but as worded, no way!

It just occurred to me that if many selfless people immediately press the life or dead button, the planet would be rather empty for the next 10,000 years. While dithering whether I should save the planet for nobody's benefit, the 10 seconds
would no doubt have passed.
A good question though, I am still thinking......

Sorry, but I won't press the button. It means my survival even if it means the death of Planet Earth. Would you press the button yourself? I can't die, as yet, I have still many things to do and finish in my lifetime. I still have my children to look after and even if they are all grown, they still need me. I want to be there for them. How about the others...would they do the same sacrifice as any one else?

YES i would and hope that those that survive have the sense to change everything that is wrong in this world today......... but if we cant do it in the time we have been on this planet then 10,000 years just seems a little to short a time, to change everything that is wrong, but if it gives mankind a fighting chance of survival and to change then yes the sacrifice would be worth it....

No. If the human race deserves to continue for another 10,000 years, then it will. And, after spending so much time in the Religion & Spirituality section reading the ideas of "the faithful", I'm not sure it wouldn't be a good thing for the world to end pretty soon anyway.

Yes. Even though I agree with you that nothing in life is guaranteed (so how can the extra 10,00 years for Earth be guaranteed??), I would have to take the chance and push that button.

Interesting question Jonathan, kudos to you :)!!
assuming or following those rules you mentioned then yes i would do it!! even though i will die, who knows, maybe in my afterlife i will be able to see what earth is like in the future. it would be a well worth sacrifice. i love astronomy(which relates to one of my biggest interests...astrology!!). when i look up at the sky at night and look for constellations, i look at Saturn, Venus and Jupiter(the most visible planets with the naked eye). all the rest of the planets i can only look at with NASA images(i dont have a telescope right now :( . all the planets in our solar system are so beautiful...each one has their own unique beauty. but theres something that stands out so much about earth: it has life! it is so beautiful to look at from outer space...it has water, life, such beauty that stands out from all the other planets. it is our home! it is amazing to know that it is the only planet that holds life. of course i would make the sacrifice!!!!! let the life contunue on earth(all types of life) :D
