Shouldn't all patriots get to vote on such a radical departure from our constitution?

If people actually read the Patriot Act, yes it probably would.

Most of the act does three things -- it establishes funds for the families of victims of terrorist attacks, it provides for the sharing of information between federal agencies, and it allows the federal govt to implement laws passed in the 1990s and earlier more effectively.

There are no provisions (except one which was already struck down in 2004) that impact the constitution. Even the National Security Letters and the ability to get at records held by utility companies is not a constitutional issue, because the courts had already ruled long ago that information given to a utility company has no expectation of privacy.

The Patriot Act is obnoxious and intrusive in some areas, yes. But it is not unconstitutional.

Many other laws, including the Military Commissions Act, which effectively suspends habeas corpus, and many other programs, like the warrantless wiretapping, are unconstitutional. As the courts have confirmed. But those are different laws.

Sadly, people are likely to vote on laws based solely on what they've been told by the media, without ever reading the laws in question. Which means their vote is blind and thus meaningless as far as the validity of the law.

the ACLU has long been a enemy of capitalism and America.
they are communist scum with no ethics.
they support pedophiles and murderers, not to mention terrorist. just read their own web site.
I've read the patriot act and see no problem with wire taps on people with terrorist ties in foreign lands. only a enemy of the USA would have a problem with it.

Hell no. Nobody wants the government constantly watching over them.

Sadly, yes, it would. We've become a nation of sheep and sheep allow themselves to be led to their own slaughter.
