yes all small and big block chevy's from that time use the same bell housing bolt patern. Just keep the flexplate ( flywheel ) that came with the engine. enjoy :)

Any small or big block Chevrolet has the same bolt pattern transmission (automatic or standard) bell housing. If you use a big block flex-plate (ring gear) the starter spacing will be no problem. There are two flex plate sizes: 153 tooth = 12.85 dia. 168 tooth = 14.13 dia.Consult any good auto parts store for the correct one. Everything depends how and where the starter is mounted. The secret is the number of teeth on the ring gear. The 400 turbo hydro will handle any horsepower a 350 can muster especially with a B&M shift kit to reduse clutch slippage during shifts and slightly raise shift points.

Yes. I have an 82 350 bolted to a 78 1 ton 400 tranny in my 91 S-10. No problems whatsoever!

If it was a 350 before and you are installing any small block chev motor, it will work. the 400 trans was just a stronger trans than the turbo 350. Small block is small block. the bell housing doesn`t change

I think you may have to change the bell housing. Not sure though , just do an inspection to see , motor mounts from 77 to 87 may have changed as well, good luck
