Is this just a myth or are they realy working on this?

Yes, there is a little research on this. It is just not economical right know.

Why saltwater? There is a lot of saltwater in oceans, leave the lakes and rivers for human use, agriculture, etc.

It has not been around long enough to take on the classification of, myth, but I doubt that there is any basis in fact for it. We have had no trouble separating hydrogen from oxygen out of water in the past but it takes energy to do this. The videos I saw on this this showed a yellow flame, Hydrogen burns with a nearly invisible flame. It looks like a scam to me.

If they are using some chemical means to separate hydrogen from oxygen, yes, we can have fuel from water, but why salt comes into the picture? Nuclear energy can be used to produce hygrogen and use the hydrogen to run automobiles etc.
