My mom decided to use my car, and she lost my car keys. I obviously can't go make a copy made without the key. So everyone is telling me the other option is to go to the dealer with the book, they make a key copy. And then I go make a copy of that. I'm asking if there is an alternative that won't be as expensive

Ok don't panic call the dealer you bought it from Monday.
Tell them you lost the keys or a family member did. And then go to the dealer with Insurance papers or purchase papers.
Take your drivers lic with you. Go to the parts dept and explain to them wht happened. Upon proof of ownership they will look at the vin number and record it and make you a copy of the keys. Beware if the keys have a chip in them they can get expensive but it is worth it. Have two sets made and keep a set where you know they will be safe. {dont put them in the car } Good Luck

Depending on the year and make of your car. Some newer imports have security features that cause you to have to go to the dealer and prove ownership and often provide the bar-code, that came with the original keys. These are known as dealer restricted keys. There are always auto-security companies which are developing diagnostic/duplication equipment, for the locksmithing industry. Eventually, this expensive equipment will be available. If the key is not restricted, the dealer will likely cut the key with a clipper. This is finicky tool that is great in the middle of nowhere, during an emergency. But the key is usually second rate and works poorly. In the hands of a non professional, it may not work at all. A locksmith should have the ability to provide you with a perfect set of " first generation "keys. As good as the original. Phone for an estimate.

if you have NO keys what so ever then your probably going to have to change the switch if its a new car 2000 and up then you have to take it to the dealer or at least a locksmith that can program a chip cuz most likely your key had a chip in it so the car wont start if the chip isn't close by the will end up puting in a new switch and a new set of keys shood be given to you but it will be a heft cost but if it's an older car then just change the ignition switch and the door lockswitch so you can get in the car and out on older cars it's not that expensive

look for a car rental company, and ask them, what they normally do ,when they lose a key.
can't say more over the net.

the other choice is the dealer, never a locksmith.
the locksmith will destroy the whole mechanism .

the dealer make the original key ,with the V.I.N.
(Vehicle Identifiction Number)

final comment........
