I can't tell you "why" people become philosophical after a certain age b/c it is too broad a question.

I can tell you I had no interest in philosophy as a child, at least not explicitly. In progressive schools we are taught leftists politics, in church we are taught "ethics" or actually the morality of god. Epistemology and metaphysics which are the most important branches of philosophy are gained by default. We pick up bits of knowledge here and there through T.V., books, and discussions.

It wasn't until by chance I discovered an interesting book which changed my outlook on philosophy for the rest of my life.

The book was ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand.

"As a human being, you have no choice about the fact that you need a philosophy. Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation - or let your subconscious accumulate a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes, doubts and fears, thrown together by chance, but integrated by your subconscious into a kind of mongrel philosophy and fused into a single, solid weight: self-doubt, like a ball and chain in the place where your mind's wings should grown."

Philosophical is:
1.concerned with or given to thinking about the larger issues and deeper meanings in life and events

Some people become philosophical from applying the experience gained as knowledge. Applying the knowledge we learn is Wisdom. Strangely though... wisdom may also be said to be (just as accurately): "crystallized pain".

There is only the fact of re-incarnation to consider when considering the levels of interests in various departments of life such as philosophy. Age of the physical body equates to many hard lessons learned in life and what they gain is the highest attainment of our physical existence which is: the ability to TRANSFORM that same pain into gold.

Bcoz, to become a philosopher one must have a matured mind, to think over against an incident, to comment on it, to view in different manner, to give best advice to the needy, to help the others in their frustration and to heel the wounds of a heart.

A child like to play, a teenage boy run behind the attraction and colours of life, and a man is in hurry to be married.

On attaining certain age, on his personal experience such as death of a dear one, escaping from an accident, seeing a real incident of disaster, he certainly think over the same and start a new person inside him called as 'Philosopher' .

It is not my experience that people become more philosophical with age. I know a great many "older" people since I fit that category myself.

People tend to become more of what they have always been during the earlier years of their lives.

Retirees may have more time to expound philosophically. So it may appear they are more philosophical.

Philosophical and age is no match
Any one can be philosophical at any age
but mostly people get it in the later stages because they tend to loose interest in the worldly things and subjects.
This is not philosophical but it is Vairagya

Sir Winston Churchill remarked:" Usually youth is for freedom and reform, maturity for judicious compromise and old age for resolution and repose"! In old age the spirit wills but the flesh is weak!!Hence, people who want to make amends to their reckless yoth and unchartered middle age, resort to phiosophy. It keeps their time filled and mind engaged.

i dont think there is ever a certain age of maturing. i think when people reach that level of higher maturity is more out of what they have already gained then what they will gain.
