Wikipedia is a useful quick reference, but its information may not always be reliable. A lot of people post information on it and that information can be wrong at times.

Most generally there are ways to verify information you receive from Wiki or any other source. For example you can do a web search on your topic and see what information you get back. Some sources are official and can be considered reliable.

You can also purchase an official encyclopedia such as Encarta, which is very reliable and usually verifiable. I like Wikipedia and use it a lot, but I always like to cross-check when I do use it if the information is important to me.

When I was a kid my folks bought us a set of encyclopedias, which my father proceeded to read starting at volume A and read through to Z.

I think his comment during this reading is apropos to your question.

He said that there was misinformation in any topic where he was well informed; so there must be misinformation through out the entire set.

He, of course, was correct. Even reputable well researched sources make mistakes. We can never take one source as the absolute truth.

I enjoy using Wikipedia, however, if you read the fine print that site tells you to be cautious.

It isn't very reliable. Some of the information in it can be verified, not everything has references to sources, and it is not uncommon for those sources to be wrong anyway.

it depends on what you're researching, because wikipedia lets people write their information a lot of things may be opinion rather than fact.
