A lot of people put their sponges in the dishwasher. Personally I don't use them for the exact reason you described. If I have a specific job to do that requires the use of a sponge, I buy a package at the dollar store so I don't feel so bad about throwing my money away.

I read that the dishwasher is the way to go, because the water is hotter than you could normally stand to handle by hand. I've also read that microwaving a wet sponge will also get it hot enough to kill the germs and mildew.

I just put a small amount of bleach on mine and squeeze it out. Our water is not chlorinated so it will become contaminated faster than "city" water and bleach or lysol with bleach is the only thing that will kill germs. If you do microwave your sponge, be very careful as two minutes in the microwave will make a sponge VERY hot.

rinse with hot water and wring them out. Then put them in the microwave and ZAP them for about 20-30 seconds. This should kill most all bacteria and mildew. I still throw mine out after a month of doing that. You can get cheap ones at the grocery store for $1 if you are going to throw them out more often.
Hope this helps!

Microwaving sponges was in the news a few months ago.

I always put my sponges in the washer and also the dishwasher, and have no problems.

The only thing you can do besides replacing them when they become foul smelling is soak them in very hot water with a little bleach. This should kill the bacteria. Rinse them out well and wring them out & let dry. I wouldn't put them in with my dishes because of all the germs and bacteria on them and also because the dishwasher won't wring them out.

I put mine in the washing machine with towels and stuff. You can even get a lingerie bag from the grocery store to keep all the sponges together.

They get a little funny shaped, but they are clean!

I've always put them in the dishwasher and have never had a problem with it.
