Nancy --
there are simply too many things that this could be to expect a quick fix --- even though, you DO have a place to start in the item you mentioned about the defroster running with no key inserted ---
This could mean that it is possible that either the ignition switch OR the defroster switch has a "short" --- in this case, which ever, would have to be replaced !!
Meantime, in order to conserve battery power -- you can remove the negative contact from the battery to keep this drain from taking you completely down while the car is idle for any extended period !!
There is also a chance that you could have what is called a "dead cell" in the battery itself -- that would cause the battery to not HOLD a charge once it IS charged up --- this takes a simple "checking procedure" that is fast and low dollar and can be done at any place that deals with batteries !!
The BEST choice here -- would be to get the car to someone who can do a systems check ON the electrical system -- this would isolate your problem fairly rapid and make the "fix procedure" a lot quicker and FAR more thorough than you going through the "check this" then "check that" nit picking !!
It is a VERY important thing, though--- for you to get this resolved with some haste -- because "shorted switches" and other electrical problems within a car are NOTORIOUS in setting them on fire -- this could happen with you IN the vehicle OR when you are away from it !!!

Hope this gives you some insight here
Good luck to you in all of this --- and get this looked into right away -- it will be a major headache for you until you do !!!!

you could just disconnect the negative battery cable but that doesnt solve the problem. when you say defroster do you mean the rear defroster ??? there are many things that can cause this kind of a problem and if not taken care of worse case could be a fire. very worse case of course. one thing i have seen many times is the hood or trunk light stays on, this requires a very dark area, vehicle off and see if there is light .
