Am a medical doctor who has been helping the poor in a remote village. People are saying that it is not possible for me to be helping the poor without having an affair with them.

Without knowing the local culture, its really tough to tell you the right thing to do, except to call out the people that are accusing you. Ask "Who is saying this about me? If they have courage they will tell this to me to my face in front of witnesses. If not, not only are they liars, but they are also cowards". Find out who is saying this, and ask them why they are doing it. "Peasants" can be extremely superstitious, as you are probably now keenly aware. Best of luck on getting this resolved in your favor.

assuming you are innocent, confront your accusors in front of the people he/they told the lie to sooner or later it's going to come to a head anyway, better to make it sooner, so you can have more control over the situation.

ignore them. and set the record straight if it turns up in your face. Make them look ridiculous for even saying it.

Say to them, "It is possible." Then ignore them.
