I was robbed just over a week ago, but the police haven't done anything and it's pretty much fizzled out. Someone gave me the idea to put up many large posters and small banners all around the area of the theft with details of the appearance of my thief, informing others and asking for information. I'm willing to try anything to help catch this bastard and to ensure this doesn't repeat again and again.

Any other ideas of what I can do to get this out into the public and to let the thief know he's wanted?

Back up, you know what he looks like?
And NO WAY, that advice will get you killed.
You didn't mention that you want your things back or that there is some deep sentiment with the stuff you lost.
Also, you can go out of your why to get this peson into jail, but petty crime is not considered a big deal these days. Even if it was in your home. It will repeat agian and agian. If you saw the person? you are lucky to have not been hurt.
You sound like you want revenge, more than you want to change the way things work.
Welcome to the world you never noticed before.
It's not the cops fault. so don't be so angry woth them.
Do you have serial numbers or photos of your stuff so they can identify your stuff, did you give them the tools they need to catch and charge the ahole?
Sorry but your better off just learning how to avoid this type of event from ever happening again. I would really like to read more detail so I can be of better help to you. And you could be a better help to others. But that's up to you.

First and foremost, I'd contact the police and ask them outright if they had made any leeway on the case. If I couldn't get anywhere with them, then I would do the posters idea you mentioned. I would even look at trying to set the scum up. And IF I were able to set him up, I'd be sure to be waitin for him. He most certainly would be sorry that he played with me. The hospital would love him as they would make some serious money off of him. IF HE could pay the bill anyway.

I think that is a great idea. I was driving down an alley the other day and there was a posterboard stapled to the back of a fence with a pair of safety goggles attached. The note read, "Whoever stole my pressure washer you forgot to get the safety goggles. Safety first." I thought this was pretty funny. Hope you catch the bastard.

specific, the small print of the theft could be great to place up up and additionally pass around to 2nd hand shops and notice if notwithstanding he stole is there, and if it then get the thiefs information and post extra posters of his call, tackle, what he stole, its worth and and so on.. with a bit of luck that'll deter the thief from ever doing it lower back and then others could be much less inlcined to accomplish that aswell.

Make yourself look like a prime target. Advertise whatever wealth you've got. Really flaunt your goods. Like a thief, he/she will want to return to your place and take whatever left you've got. That's when you stage the stakeout. If the thief comes back, start wailing on him/her with any kind of weapon of opportunity, whatever's available. Preferably, nail him/her repeatedly in the legs, so that escape will be painstakingly impossible. Then call the cops.

your on the right track. some one stole a stained glass art piece from my window. I put the word out to people I know that are familiar with the scum in the area. And people that ride bikes or walk. And it turned up in someones window.

I went with a big friend to give them a choice of handing it over or deal with the cops. they handed it over

good luck
